Our Story

From a Small Gathering to a Thriving Family

What began in 2009 as a heartfelt gathering of just forty-four members has grown into a vibrant network of congregations serving Shona-speaking communities across Gauteng and beyond.

Nurtured by unwavering faith and dedicated leadership, the Shona Service at GUMC has remained a close-knit worshipping family — deeply rooted in faith, community, and the enduring identity of the United Methodist Church.

"A defining moment for our community was the collective agreement to remain steadfastly a United Methodist church — preserving our denominational identity and our name."

The Journey of the Shona Service
2009

The Genesis — A Sunday in Johannesburg CBD

Our story commenced with an inaugural Sunday service at the Gauteng Legislature building on Rissik Street, led by a delegation from Pretoria. An invitation to seventy known members saw a far larger turnout — marking the spontaneous birth of a new, enthusiastic congregation.

2009 – 2010

Finding Our Home & Identity

As numbers swelled, the congregation relocated to a more spacious home on De Villiers Street. Guided by divine providence, the church was placed under the Mozambique Episcopal Area — and made the defining choice to remain a United Methodist church.

2011

A Shepherd for the Growing Flock

Bishop Joaquina Nhanala appointed Rev. David Mucherera to shepherd the burgeoning flock. By this time the church had grown to approximately 450 adult members, ministering across Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Rustenburg.

2011 – Today

A Spreading Light

Under dedicated pastoral care, the Shona Service extended across South Africa — establishing new preaching points and local churches in Rosettenville, Germiston, and circuits nationwide, while preserving its close-knit, Shona-speaking character.

2025

Embracing a New Season

The church welcomes Rev. Kotsanayi Cheriti Katsande as Pastor in Charge — a continuation of the rich legacy of devoted leadership, profound community care, and vibrant Sunday worship.
